Welcome!
When we moved into out darling little house 3 years ago, I knew then that the
Kitchen needed a face lift.
Love the layout but there was not enough counter space as well as cupboard space.
You see we moved from a large farmhouse kitchen/home to a much smaller space.
Hence the Kitchen Island....
Rather than trying to build it from scratch we took the option of visiting our
local Ikea store.......
We knew exactly what we wanted but..... all their pre made Islands were either too big,
or didn't have the layout we were after.
So this is my story.....
We started with the AKURUM System......as seen here.
AKURUM
Base cabinet with 3 drawers, white, Härlig white
Base cabinet w shelf/drawer/door
We selected Stat door fronts .
STÅT
Door, white
$26.00
We used a plain fronts on the two top drawers
STÅT
$26.00
Deep drawer front, set of 3, white
$50.00
Once we built the units we positioned them with the base cabinet to the left and the
three drawers to the right, then they were bolted together underneath.
Then the hardware was installed.
EKEBODA
$50.00
Handle, stainless steel
$11.99 / 2 pack
Next came the choice of counter. We chose butcher block.
NUMERÄR
$11.99 / 2 pack
Next came the choice of counter. We chose butcher block.
NUMERÄR
Countertop, beech
$269.00
Instead of purchasing a back to cover up the two units we chose
beadboard. We purchased this at our local Home Depot.
I added these cute bee hooks for my towels.
Then to give it a look of built in look we purchased trim 7" deep.
Measured and cut it out on the mitre saw then nailed it on.
Then cut from a block of wood we routered out the feet in the front.
Then I painted the beadboard and trim to match the rest of the island.
Love how it turned out and so inexpensive.
The Kitchen Island costs under $1,000. to make.
Customized to our needs.

ReplyDeleteThat's a beautiful island, and so smart, I love it!
ReplyDeleteGreat job Linda and Mr WWH!!!
ReplyDeleteI have beadboard everywhere....love it!
Hides a multitude of sins!!
Love the shiny countertops too!!
Does it work on tubs??? I have an old clawfoot tub at the cottage, that could use some shine!!!
Rained all day here....
Cheers!
Linda :o)
Linda I LOVE IT!! It looks awesome!
ReplyDeleteGood job on the customization, looks like it belongs there now. Just a little tweaking and it looks more farmhouse than industrial, fantastic.
ReplyDeleteWow, you really did your homework in building your kitchen island. You did a great job. I love the bead board and the nickel pulls. It looks really great!
ReplyDeleteAwesome . Looks good , I love the bead board . Lots of space there now for you ! Thanks for sharing. Have a good day !
ReplyDeleteFabulous job, Linda!! Your solution for the back of the island is one of my favourites - in fact, we have a "peninsula" in our kitchen (rather than an island) and I'm going to finish the end with beadboard for more interest. A couple of hooks will dress it up too. And I love how you've staged it with the tiered baskets.
ReplyDeleteGreat job! The custom touches really make a difference, don't they? The island looks beautiful in your kitchen. -- Jan
ReplyDeleteWhat a great job you have done! It is perfect and suits your needs perfectly. Love the base molding and the way you finished this to look like a piece of furniture.

Your kitchen island is beautiful! I love the cute bee hooks and the beadboard.
ReplyDeleteThat kitchen island looks very nice! I can see that you picked out great options and ended up with the best! I really thought that it was built-in at first, and I was shocked to know that I was mistaken. Hehe! Anyway, this is a great change for your kitchen! I think you’re still up for more fantastic changes. I hope you can also consider repainting wood cabinets. :)

Greoria's got a point there, Linda. The cabinet you chose fits well with your kitchen's new look. It looks like it was really made for your kitchen. It doesn't look big nor small on it. It's perfect.
