White, White, White

Rug Hooking!!!

Why do they call it rug hooking when I'm not hooking a rug..

White, creams, taupes.....

Hooking on burlap.......

Not sure of the size yet, but it is to become a pillow.

Do you hook....

Years ago many women hooked their rugs to keep their floors warm.

Wool was not the only fibre used to hook with........ many used large hooks and old garments torn

into strips for hooking.  Whatever worked.

I have hooked and designed many rugs.
 I love this one... Stars!!!!

 Hooked snowman pillows .....

I use 100% wool and then I felt it.  This procedure is done by washing your wool then drying it in the

dryer. It comes out much thicker.......

Working on Down On the Farm

Here it is finished.

I hang these rugs.

I hook on my lap with a wide hoop as well I hook on a frame. My wool is cut into strips, (we call them strings) and then I put them into clear bags so I can see what I'm working with .I have a wool cutter.
I love this width . It is #8 or primitive width. So you use a larger hook.

My pillow that I am working on is hooked on a hoop.

That way I can watch some of my favourite TV programs.

It's not a hard form of art once you get your rythmn.

I have been hooking for 10 years.  Oh how time flies.

It's not a craft for OLD LADIES!!!!  Yet some my think so.

Well I hope I haven't bored you to death.....

Try your hand at it.   You may grow to like it.  Start saving those old 100% wool sweaters, old skirts, jackets.

They may come in handy some day!!

As always thanks for stopping by. Please leave me a comment.
                          I love reading them all.

  1. I love what you are doing with hooking. It is not a craft it is an art! Not everyone can do this unless they have a store bought kit.

  4. Good Morning Linda, Gosh you are talented, I love your designs. I made a wool rug when I first got married, well actually George and I did it together. My Gramps used to make rugs out of cloth and they were known as rag rugs, we had a few dotted around the house when I was young. A really lovely post, I enjoyed it immensely. Best Wishes Daphne

  5. Oh, how I've wanted to do that! I even bought books on how to do it but that is as far as it got. I love your patterns as that is the beauty of rug hooking. Some can be simple but the texture of the wool adds a whole other dimension. I plan on looking at other posts of yours as this is my first time visiting. So much fun seeing what others are up to... great inspiration!

  7. They look really pretty and I know they are different than latch hook, but I did my fair share of latch hook pillows, rugs etc., when I was a kid. Good memories.

  8. No, rug hooking is not for old ladies. I hooked hangings years ago, but gave it up after extreme tendonitis. I love yours. This post makes me want to try my hand at this again.

  9. Hi there,
I just found your blog. How nice and peaceful it is. And may I say.......I LOVE your hair!!!!!!!
I am a hooker. No, it is not for old ladies. I started hooking in 1992 and have completed several rugs. Unfortunately, I have more "starts" than "finishes". LOL. Just wondering if you and any of your ladies needed help getting started. I've started many new hookers on the internet........and no, you do not need a kit! Nothing I hook is in kit form.
Just sayin...........if you need any help............I would be happy to help.

  15. I'm thrilled to finally see a rug hooker sharing her craft. I would very much like to get started with this and wonder if you can refer me to a place where I can order a cutter to cut the material?

Thanks so much for sharing this.

I got a pillow kit one year and a few years later a 2 x 3 rug. It is so much fun and relaxing! What a great gift idea. So nice to give something made with loving hands.

  26. I love your hooking, Linda. I've never tried it except for a little rug kit when I was little. I don't think it was the same thing. Sounds like the perfect thing to keep idle hands busy. Thank you for sharing your beautiful stuff at my place!
