Kitchen Reno on a budget cont'd

Hello friends!

We are just about finished with the cupboards....waiting on a few doors.

We hummed and hawed over the tile....do we pull it up and replace it or........

why not just paint the ugly 5 tiles......

You see they are white...and white is good right....sooooooo.....

I did some investigating and found that I needed a oil base paint to paint ceramic...

Well try to find that here in Canada...They have banned all oil based paints.....

Only painters  can obtain oil base and I wasn't about to hire a painter for 5 tiles....

Look what I found at Home Depot......

It says it's for appliances but I used it on the 5 tiles........

Perfect!!!!

I washed the tiles clean and then dried them. Made sure I taped all around the tile that needed

to be painted and then some.     Just a precaution....You get overspray when you  use spray paint...

I found out the hard way...But then I keep a supply of Mr.Clean sponges on hand.

Look at the tiles I painted.........

FANTASTIC  don't you think......

So no messy job of pulling tiles and replacing drywall or $$$ spent on new white tile......

This project cost $7.99. Not bad eh!! Could have been at least $100.00 by the time you bought

the tiles and the drywall and the grout and the mud for the drywall... and the tile glue........

So the moral of the story is do some research  first.........

  2. I have a few old fashioned colored tiles sprinkled around my otherwise white backsplash too! Plus some hunter green tile hot pads inserted into my counter top. Yes, I said hunter green. I thought I'd be living with them until a major kitchen redo which is scheduled for... oh yeah, never! Yipee! A can of spray paint! Thanks SO MUCH for this information.

  3. Excellent idea! I would say that was a good choice. You can't go wrong with basic white tiles. I have tumbled tile in a beige color and am already tired of them. I suggested to my husband that I would like to change it out to white beadboard, but he said that would be a lot of work and he still liked the tile. Argghhh! Guess I will have to keep it a bit longer.

  4. Wow, smart move!! I know what you mean though, spray painting is not easy on a project like that.
    Good job.

  6. Me likey! I've got beige tiles on the bathroom walls that I would love to paint white. But then again, I'm still stuck with the beige tile floor. :)

  7. Great solution, Linda. I've painted ceramic back splashes before - had an ugly pink/beige tile in my previous house and painted it white with acrylic (which was what the paint shop recommended). It held up fine. But with just 5 tiles to paint, I think your idea rocks!!

  8. Linda, you are so smart to try this rather than replacing the tiles! They turned out great, too. Now I know what kind of paint to use if I ever need to paint tile. Thanks for sharing the info!
